October 13, 2007
- Lynn Kleiner
"Kids Make Music! Listen, Sing, Move and Play
with Puppets, Props, Stories and Instruments!"

Lynn Kleiner has established herself as a leader in the world of early childhood music education.
Her workshop focused on activities for preschool through second grade. She shared techniques for improving timing and pitch matching at any level, while introducing music concepts and vocabulary, as we joyfully made music together. Activities for exploration and creativity were also delightfully presented.
Lynn made us aware of how much "talking" to students that we do when the important thing is to actively involve the students with music. It was a fun day with many activities using various music styles.
We were reminded of many techniques to use in classroom management that do not need "teacher talk" to accomplish them.
September 15, 2007 - Jim Solomon
"What'd We Do First???"...Process Teaching

Jim Solomon is a nationally-renowned Orff-Schulwerk teacher and clinician.
With over 80+ participantes, Jim led us in a jam session of singing,
moving, clapping, dancing, and improvising.
Together we performed a variety of kid-tested pieces for over 50 drums & congas, recorders,
and orff instruments, and then analyzed the process utilized in the teaching each piece.

3rd Workshop* February 2, 2008 - Cindy Hall
"Orff-Schulwerk: Playing With a Purpose"
Cindy Hall teaches Orff certification courses at The University of St. Thomas and the University of Kentucky and is an active conference and workshop clinician. She presented active Orff Schulwerk lessons with an emphasis on melodic and rhythmic curriculum concepts. Using poetry, folk song, instrumental pieces, and movement, participants worked through the process of imitation, exploration, and improvisation. A portion of the workshop addressed beginning recorder pedagogy and the application of a three-step process for learning new notes and fingerings. The workshop included an example of how a series of lessons can culminate in a grade-level performance that is both entertaining and informative for parents and administrators.

Rescheduled - 4th Workshop * APRIL 19, 2008 - Jean Hersey
DUE TO OUR PREVIOUSLY SNOWED OUT WORKSHOP - THIS IS OUR NEWLY RE-SCHEDULED DATE
April 19, 2008 - Jean Hersey
"Let the Children Be Their Own Musicians"
- Student assessment of their own creative work.
Jean Hersey is the Level I pedagogy and movement instructor at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago (a course she started in 2004). She regularly presents workshops both at local and national levels. This was an active session of creative activities in music and movement, followed by discussions of how to assess those activities. The emphasis was on creating a safe classroom atmosphere and clear rubrics to allow students to assess each other's work constructively. Taking the pressure off the teacher and puting the control in the hands of the students was a theme of the workshop activities.

Previous Workshop Year 2006-07

September 16, 2006 - John Feierabend
Early Childhood: Developing Musicianship

"First Steps in Music: Vocal & Movement Development"
John returns with the "preequel" to his workshop from 2004 on conversational solfege. As our society becomes evermore tied to electronic media and our children are engaged less and less in creative play, it has become evident that educators must take steps to ensure that children receive the foundations they need to become musically literate and competent adults. This workshop was designed to lay the foundation for addressing the musical needs of young children. Teachers of all levels will benefit by learning about how children learn with music.

* 2nd Workshop of the Year 2006-07

October 14, 2006 - Steve Calantropio
"The Volumes: An Outstanding Teaching Resource"

The five voumes of the Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children are much more than a collection of nifty pieces to be played on the instrumentarium. It is a collection of patterns, exercises, and pieces of varying lengths - all of which are the foundation of elemental music. The volumes are a jumping off point for creative play in the music class and serve as an endless source of inspiration for addressing the basic concepts of musicianship at all levels.
Steve gave us a great understanding of the "Process" that is used in the Orff method as he showed us the small steps that eventually led us to the seemingly complicated pieces from the volumes. He was able to show how to break down some of the pieces in the volumes to make them achievable by students.

November 8-11, 2006 - National AOSA Conference - Omaha, Nebraska

* Our 3rd Workshop of the year 2006-07

February 17, 2007 - Doug Goodkin
" Teaching Jazz to All Ages "

Despite the weather, the workshop was a great success with a fairly large crowd.
Drawing from 32 years of teaching children at The San Francisco School
and over 20 years of developing a jazz curriculum,
Doug shared material from his internationally recognized book,
Now's the Time: Teaching Jazz to All Ages as well as some of his other resources.
The workshop demonstratec how jazz and Orff Schulwerk can go hand in hand
when there is no previous experience in either.
Band instruments, drum sets, chromatic percussion, recorders,
and regular Orff instruments were used by participants in playing Jazz selections.
This special workshop ran from 9:00 - 3:30.

* Our 4th and Last Workshop of the year 2006-07.

March 24, 2007 - Linda Ahlstedt
"Put Some Spring In Your Step"

We celebrated the Spring season as we explored exciting new original songs by Linda Ahlstedt

* September 17, 2005 - Shirley McRae
"Making It Count: The Elementary Music Experience"

The workshop featured lessons which explored the development of rhythm skills. Steady beat, rhythmic patterns, the use of ostinati, relative note values and scoring rhythms were all be addressed. Then Shirley moved into the realm of melody.
She addressed developing the characteristic singing voice, head voice, pitch matching, unison singing and rounds.
Participants were led to the instrumentarium to embelish songs and activities.
Unpitched percussion, recorders and barred instruments were included in this portion of the workshop.
It was an exceptionally well done workshop which clearly layed out an Orff-Schulwerk process approach.
There were more than 100 participants in attendance at this first workshop.
Unfortunately for those who missed it, due to the presenters request, this presentation was not video taped.
* October 15, 2005 - Barbara Grenoble & Peggy McCreary
" Puppets Can Teach Just About Anybody Anything"

Barbara and Peggy have used puppet play extensively in their work with students from pre-school age through high school.
They showed us how puppets can unlock the imagination and stimulate creativity.
It was a marvelous workshop day.
Can you imagine teachers staying longer than the workshop's ending time of 1:30 ?
Well, we did because no one wanted the workshop to end.
Many curriculum objectives and elements of music were explored using puppets.
Barbara and Peggy showed us how to turn a workaday objective into a bit of magic.
It was a workshop which really did spur our creativity and imaginations.
Who knew there were so many objects puppets could be made from ?

November 9 - 12, 2005 - Birmingham, Alabama National AOSA Conference

* February 11, 2006 - Brian Crisp
"It's Elementaria: Keetman to Composition"

Gunild Keetman created elegant melodies and simple, yet, exquisite forms.
Coupling her lesser known pieces from the original German Musik fur Kinder Volumes
and other source works with her pedagogical ideas found in Elementaria,
We explored practical and thoughtful models for student compositions.
This workshop integrated singing, playing, speaking and dancing into well processed lessons
that foster joyful learning and critical thinking.

* March 11 , 2006 - Cyndee Giebler
" Everyday Improvisatiom : Instrument Rich Or Not"

Cyndee took participants through the process of engaging students in the work of improvisation.
Many music educators are reluctant to include improvisational lessons because they are unsure of how to make them work.
Well this is your key to the door.
The workshop led the particpants through lessons which will prove that any music class can be a place of creativity.
You don't need a room full of instruments, body and voice can be used to create elemental music.
If you have instruments, good for you, the sky is the limit.

* September 18, 2004 - John Feierabend
"Developing Music Literacy Using Conversational Solfege"

John led us in a number of activities that can develop student reading ability. Conversational solfege develops an understanding of music through the use of rhythm and tonal syllables at conversational levels that gradually evolves into reading, writing, improvisational and composition skills.
We had a great day and there where over 96 participants at the workshop.
Thanks John !
 * October 9, 2004 - David Frego
"Dalcroze Eurhythmics : A Rhythmic Approach to Music Education"

This activity-based workshop covered the elements of music through rhythmic and purposeful movement. Participants discovered how the Dalcroze approach can be
integrated seamlessly into existing lessons.
It was a great day for all who attended.
So much fun and so much learned.
David gave us a new meaning for the term " Tie One On "
-( an inside joke ).
Thanks David !
